This picture depicts Prospero becuase he was the former and rightful Duke of Milan.

1.) Prospero was the Duke of Milan before the dukedom was taken from him by his brother, Antonio. A Duke is a British nobleman who holds the highest hereditary title outside the royal family, ranking immediately below a prince and above a marquis. A duke is historically the highest rank below the monarch and controls a duchy (A duchy is a territory ruled by a duke or duchess). Dukes were the rulers of the provinces and the superiors of the counts in the cities and later, in the feudal monarchies, the highest-ranking peers of the king.

This picture depicts the relationship between Prospero and his daughter, Miranda. Even though, she is older now, he raised her by himself on the island.

2.) In the play, Prospero was a single father to Miranda all her life, assuming her mother died giving birth. As her father, Prospero was expected to provided her with a "dowry", or the money and goods that a wife brings to her husband at marriage, while Ferdinand would have been expected to give "jointures", or settlements, for his wife should she be widowed.

Spell_book_ldann.jpg
This picture depicts Prospero because in the play, he uses spells to cause the storm and control the other people on the island.

3.) Prospero used magic and socery in the play to control many of the other characters. In the 17th century, any kinda of "magic" was considered a sin. There were considered to be two types of magic: black magic and white magic. Black magic was associated with the devil and was thought to cause bad luck, illness or death. White magic on the other hand, was used for spells such as love, health and good luck.
4.) Some people could label Prospero as a dictator while on the island. By definition, a dictator is is a ruler who assumes sole and absolute power but, without hereditary ascension such as an absolute monarch. On the island, Prospero takes the island from Caliban who is not as educated as Prospero or even Miranda. Prospero declares himself as the ruler of the island and governs it as he pleases.
5.) In The Tempest, Prospero used his magic along with astrogoly to create the storm. Astrology is the study of the position and aspects of celestrial bodies in the belief that they have an ifluence on the course of natural earthly occurances and human affairs.
6.) Instead of living in luxury in Milan, Prospero and Miranda lived on a deserted island. If they would have still been living as royalty, they would have expensive funiture and other things in their home. In the 17th century, funtiture for the rich was often made of walnut or mahogany. Also, they may have had an upholstered chair, which became popular in the 17th century.
7.) Because they were on the island and had no other teachers, Miranda had to learn from Prospero. It was common for children to learn at home in the 17th century but usually it was from the mother. Upper class children attended an infant school. Infant school is a term used in the United Kingdom to describe a school for children between the ages four and seven. Following their time in that school, boys usually went on to grammer school while girls were taught at home by a tutor.

In this picture, we see the types of clothing some one of the royal family would wear in the 17th century.

8.) Because they had been on the island for so long, Prospero and Miranda were missing the latest fashion trends. In the 17th century, broad lace or linen collars were becoming popular and waistlines for both men and women were rising. As the years progressed, the silhouette changed from being very close to the body to broadening. Sleeves became very full and voluminous.
9.) In the 1600's, if a Duke had no sons, the heir to the throne would be the Duke's oldest daughter. In Prospero's case, it would be Miranda. If the Duke did have sons, it would go to the oldest son.
10.) In the play, Prospero uses Ariel and Caliban as his slaves, which could also be considered as serfdom. Serfdom is the staus of unfree peasants. It was a form of slavery which developed primarily during the Middle Ages in Europe.

I Put A Spell On You - I chose this song because Prospero used a lot of spells thoughout the play on the other characters for revenge.
